DOT +83...Surgery scheduled

The removal of my spleen is set for this Friday morning. We were glad to hear so we can get it over with. The surgery will now have to be an open surgery which they believe is safer with my circumstances.

Dr. Chao said today that he is expecting a bounce in my counts quickly and that my recovery time in the hospital should only be 2-4 days as long as there is nothing unusual. I'm not getting my hopes up with the 2 days. After that, the outpatient clinic can monitor me daily.

They will be sending my spleen to the National Institute of Health in DC for culturing. The organism I had in 2010 can not be cultured at Duke and they want to see if it is still in the spleen.

We should find out more this week. But I have become more and more comfortable with this surgery as it gets closer. There is a great team here looking after me!

  2. Dear Burns, This blog is so wonderful. We think of you so often and this has been such a great way to stay informed. I just spoke to your mom and she said you were feeling more confident about the surgery. I am sure that the doctors are now resolute about the best plan for you. As you said, you've been blessed with fabulous health care for so many years and you continue to have the best! ......even it is someone from Duke! Did you ever look at Friday Night Lights? Pete and I watched all four seasons in just a few weeks. I promise Laura will like it! xoxox ann

  6. Laura,

I took water aerobics with your Mom yesterday. I told her how proud I am of you, and deservedly so. "Trooper" dosen't even begin to describe it! The water aerobics is great fun outside, although your Mom and I kept getting caught in some GCC version of a riptide, and we kept crashing into each other. Hysterical! Am thinking about both of you and know all will go well!

    Love, Ross

P.S. I noticed Ann's shot at Duke. Boo hiss!

Hi Burns - I've asked our minister at Church of the Holy Family in Chapel Hill to ask for prayers (anonymously)for your successful surgery tomorrow, so lots of people you've never met or even heard of have taken up the call to pray you through your procedure. We know you can do this!

We eagerly await the good news tomorrow that the surgery has been completely successful and that you're already recovering nicely. I've asked Mary Jane to give us a call after she hears from your folks. And I hope she'll be taking care of Ripley too - I plan to go over and check on them tomorrow and Saturday.
